PeerBlock Forums

PeerBlock is a new version (aka a "fork") of the popular PeerGuardian 2 software. It blocks "known bad" computers from accessing yours, for example governments, corporate entities, and those flagged for anti-p2p activities. PeerBlock maintains the functionality of the original PeerGuardian 2 program, but includes fixes for various issues that remain unaddressed in the latest (~3 year old) version of PG2.

I checked out all four minidump files in "BlueScreenView" and these are the offending drivers that it reports:

nwifi.sys------------7751---------Points towards either a faulty network driver or network card
athrxusb.sys------6e587--------Atheros USB network adapter
ndis.sys------------44270--------Microsoft Windows NDIS network driver system driver file

It looks as though it has something to do with your network adapter. It could be the device itself or maybe the drivers need to be updated and refreshed. I would download the latest drivers and then uninstall the network old drivers from Device Manager. I would also check if the chipset for the MOBO is the latest. Maybe that will solve the problem.

i found out how to attach them, for some reason on these minidmp files dont show my username in the permissions under security tab...added my user name then gave myself full control then viola (i created a restore point since it prompted to warn me that doing what i did could make me vulnerable?).

why do i have problems with attaching one minidmp file but not the other? i was able to attach my first dmp file from my first BSOD but not the subsequent two which lead me to do what i did to attach those files.

found out another thing, my comp's getting old lol, 99% sure its the memory in my g-card thats faulty, ive seen some unusual glitches in my civ4 game in the background graphics i.e. i saw a flickering of light on a mountain side which had a mine there, there shouldnt be any such light flickering. i think i may have somewhat fried my g-card, the fan made noise during the last two winters and i've had to take it out of the comp and put back in because for some reason windows stopped recognizing it. i was able to fix it and make it work but im pretty sure its the g-card.

since i own a micro tower that has a motherboard that doesn't support any memory above ddr2, im not going to invest in a new g-card til i "build" my new computer i guess i need now some time in the future.

let me know if those dmp files point towards faulty g-card memory, thanks again.

Constant outgoing connections from utorrent while not torrenting

Hi,

I've been torrenting more than usual recently and I just noticed today that Peerblock has been blocking a lot of outgoing connections for at least the past week. I did a little fiddling around and the situation seems to be this (I'm a real amateur at this sort of thing so please bear with me):

When I run utorrent I immediately get a blocked outgoing connection on a seemingly random port, the screenshot of my recent peerblock history shows this, each time the port changes is when I've closed and restarted utorrent. As you can see there are a number of additional blocked outgoing connections on the same port at random intervals, and I'm 100% certain that these are occuring whether or not I'm currently connected to a torrent, just so long as utorrent is running.

I've also attached an image of TCPView confirming (I assume) that the activity on that port is associated with utorrent(?) And I've noticed that at least one of the port in question is always constantly sending and receiving a small amount of data.

I tried updating utorrent to the latest version but that hasn't helped, the screenshots having been taken after I did this,
(I just 2 minutes ago reinstalled, rather than updated, utorrent and I noticed a large number of active connections from utorrent in TCPView that I hadn't seen before, seemingly related to something called amazonaws.com, these then seemingly disconnected after 20 seconds or so...)

Is this something I should be very concerned about? Is there anything I should / can do about it?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

thanks TOF for the suggestions, i myself am leading towards a RAM problem too, hopefully not my g-cards' (i have a nvidia g100). i'd rather upgrade to ddr3 memory first anyways so i'm hoping its my RAM sticks.

got another BSOD today, this time while i was away from my computer, heres the message i got:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name:	BlueScreen
OS Version:	6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID:	1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode:	1e
BCP1:	FFFFFFFFC0000005
BCP2:	FFFFFA60047D3751
BCP3:	0000000000000000
BCP4:	FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
OS Version:	6_0_6002
Service Pack:	2_0
Product:	768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini052412-02.dmp (says im not the owner so i cant attach it? WTF.)
C:\Users\brandon\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-2705416-0.sysdata.xml (this file don't exist on my comp)
C:\Users\brandon\AppData\Local\Temp\WERAC75.tmp.version.txt (this file don't exist also)

Read our privacy statement:
[go.microsoft.com]

if its the same problem as last time then it probably is a RAM problem then at least i can get that fixed.

on another problem i've been having, those permission changes and me not being able to open/attach those dmp files, why is that? how do i correct it? im the only user of this comp so i should have access to all right?

i couldn't attach anything for above reasons in paranthesis.

again thanks for all the help.

Don't believe one bit of the above FUD. It's all inaccurate at and some of it is a downright malicious attempt to make you vulnerable.

Slyck failed miserably because they assumed the MediaDefender list they were comparing Level 1 to was actual IP addresses, not decoys.
They also failed to check their data against real-world IP allocations, failing to recognize the "4 million" nonexistant residential addresses.
Every aspect of their so-called "research" was sloppy, doomed to fail by their well-known prejudice and hostility against the people at Bluetack.

In fact, we detected and blocked all of MediaDefender's actual IP addresses long before the leak confirmed they were responsible.
It was this fact which quickly led to their temporary loss of a lot of business as customers realized how easily we found them and lost confidence.
Eventually they managed to cover this weakness with disinformation seeded through places like Slyck and extensive astroturfing on P2P sites.
You can get your antidote to all those lies and propaganda from us right here ==> IP Block Lists Myths Misconceptions

PsyOrg's article does not mention that we used the same research to sharpen our techniques. They also misinterpreted the results of that research,
but this is understandable because the paper was written for an audience which would not have made such a simple mistake. In fact, what Banerjee
and his professors had identified was a combination of millions of fake IP addresses being transmitted by a small number of powerful servers which
all together amounted to approximately 15% of the total traffic on the whole network including the illusionary inflation of those fake addresses.
It's a complicated mess of factors that only those having experience with the dynamic and rapidly growing P2P networks could read correctly.

This combination of factors is why PeerBlock appears to be blocking as much as 15% of the traffic at all times and is also why P2P filters in
P2P apps are blocking far less at the same time. The blocklists have grown to work so well over the years that P2P apps see a major drop in
noise if you use any sort of defense involving these lists and that translates directly into less wasted bandwidth and lower resource usage.
In plain english it means your downloads run a little faster and your PC runs a little cooler even though P2P traffic is way up from 2007-08.
It also means the number of complaints against PeerBlock users has gone way down as the MAFIAA complaint mills ramped up production.

Bittorrent/µTorrent's advice against blocklists is driven by the FUD that MediaDefender and the MAFIAA pump constantly into their forums.
I personally found the DHT seeds years ago and made sure they would never be blocked. We do block their testing PCs and they are OK with that.
They just never removed that false statement from their site because they guy that runs their site and forums is one of those who has a prejudice
against blocklists and a particularly stubborn and contemptuous attitude towards anyone who chooses to disagree with him or criticize his actions. :

I also watch open trackers for changes in IP addresses and keep them unblocked. Private trackers are instantly cleared or blocked on request.
I just threw this in before some boob tries to spread FUD about that too. We do not and never will block P2P infrastructure. We know how P2P works.

All of those bogus complaints were made years ago and were quickly discredited at that time. Since then not one of those guys has tried it again,
partly because they learned about the subject and regret making fools of themselves and partly because they know I'm ready with the facts.

I just installed PeerBlock and went to update the list but iblocklist.com is totally unresponsive.
I tried to load their home page as well with no luck. I tried using a tor browser, assuming my ISP, the evil empire, might be blocking the site but nada using tor browser too. Site seems to be down.
Is there a scheduled maintenance window for this website that I am unable to find out about ?

Peerblock does block what the list that it loaded "says" to it to block .
If you change the list with one where that ip range isn't blocked your problem will end .
I think that Peerblock shouldn't come with any blocklist but only tell where to get them .
Many users get a confusion because of this in my opinion .
