PeerBlock Forums

PeerBlock is a new version (aka a "fork") of the popular PeerGuardian 2 software. It blocks "known bad" computers from accessing yours, for example governments, corporate entities, and those flagged for anti-p2p activities. PeerBlock maintains the functionality of the original PeerGuardian 2 program, but includes fixes for various issues that remain unaddressed in the latest (~3 year old) version of PG2.

Constant outgoing connections from utorrent while not torrenting (no replies)

Hi,

I've been torrenting more than usual recently and I just noticed today that Peerblock has been blocking a lot of outgoing connections for at least the past week. I did a little fiddling around and the situation seems to be this (I'm a real amateur at this sort of thing so please bear with me):

When I run utorrent I immediately get a blocked outgoing connection on a seemingly random port, the screenshot of my recent peerblock history shows this, each time the port changes is when I've closed and restarted utorrent. As you can see there are a number of additional blocked outgoing connections on the same port at random intervals, and I'm 100% certain that these are occuring whether or not I'm currently connected to a torrent, just so long as utorrent is running.

I've also attached an image of TCPView confirming (I assume) that the activity on that port is associated with utorrent(?) And I've noticed that at least one of the port in question is always constantly sending and receiving a small amount of data.

I tried updating utorrent to the latest version but that hasn't helped, the screenshots having been taken after I did this,
(I just 2 minutes ago reinstalled, rather than updated, utorrent and I noticed a large number of active connections from utorrent in TCPView that I hadn't seen before, seemingly related to something called amazonaws.com, these then seemingly disconnected after 20 seconds or so...)

Is this something I should be very concerned about? Is there anything I should / can do about it?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

Hello,
I have installed as my "preferred AV" MSSE.
It is a very good AV, I have used it for well over 18 months (& despite some indiscriminate surfing & many porn dwlds) I have had zero virus problems.
It has been a surprise for me to discover a MS product that is a genuine top performer!
But I have found that it is intollerent of other AVs, although claims otherwise are made.
It even requires firewalls to be disabled.
So I ask myself is it not likely that PeerBlock will conflict.
MSSE is installed widely now so I hope a clear cut answer is available.
Many thanks.

Why utorrent 1.8.5 connects to IPs that they are on peerblock list when I don't seeding or downloading anything?

I removed everything from utorrent, and turn off DHT network, and still Peerblock block incoming connections to utorrent from black list.
I'm sure that those connections are to utorrent because of port which is used by utorrent, and when I exit it they are stop

There are legitimate attempted connections from specific ports on certain remote systems having nothing to do with BitTorrent, but Peerblock is nevertheless blocking them and causing problems. I have attempted to use the context menu of the main display to create exceptions to allow some of the remote IP addresses, but the remote addresses vary widely while the remote port always remains the same. I would have to closely monitor Peerblock's activity for each of the addresses that should be excluded, and it would be terribly inefficient and tedious.

Where are these "Allow for..." exceptions stored? How can I remove the existing ones and replace them with generalized ones that allow specific remote ports, either from any address or perhaps a range?

Hello everyone!

While attempting to use PeerBlock and uTorrent at the same time, uTorrent is unable to obtain information from any trackers regarding seeds and peers. I need to temporarily disable PeerBlock, so the torrent becomes active, and then re-enable it. The torrent seeds and downloads fine after that point.

Anyone have any idea why trackers are not working? I assumed my blocklists might have something to do with it, so I've included a screenshot of them. Is my list to paranoid? Anyone happen to know if certain ones of those interfere with trackers?

It was said back in October that PB was still being worked on - any update? It's a *real* pain when you want to unblock an entire service that's in multiple blocked ranges (so unblocking one single IP that appears is not sufficient, as it has to be done over and over and over for each IP that appears). The Search function in the Edit Lists does not work (as I have previously pointed out) and manually adding a bulk PermAllow list is *not* possible. Please at least correct this basic functionality in one way or another. I have tried several ways around these issues, and none have worked. We all know IPBL/BT go over-board in the breadth of their blocking (yes, it can be said better safe than sorry), but right now there is no *effective* way for use to adjust for that, aside from IP by IP :(

That said, PB is the *ONLY* remaining blocker (that I am aware of).

Thanks!

PeerBlock's default list-update site - iblocklist.com - is currently down. While it is down, lists hosted at iblocklist.com will not be able to check for updates, giving an error "cannot connect to url". Note that the lists your machine has already download should still be "mostly" current, so your computer should remain at least relatively well protected.

We are working with iblocklist.com to help them restore service. We'll update this post as more information is available.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

List Verification Failure (2 replies)

Hello, I am new to this site.

I have notice that I cannot get onto iblocklist and their lists are not downloading giving me a message of 'List Verification Failure'. I thought I had to reinstall as I did happen to get a virus as it came about but that is long gone. Is there any reason for this failure?

I tried going into peerblock.conf and changing the lastversion run to 267 in order to recalibrate it in the only advice I have read so far. This only appears to work with un-friendly URLs. As I'm only using lvl 1-3, dshield and the other provided lists for my blocking needs.

Any advice on how to deal with this???
