PeerBlock Won't Launch on Windows 7 System
May 02, 2015 05:49AM
Operating System: Windows 7 Pro. x64 SP1
PeerBlock Version: PeerBlock v1.2-r693 (as a portable)

Note: I am running this PeerBlock as a portable. How I got the portable is that at one time I installed to PeerBlock to a WinXP machine, copied the contents of the install folder to another folder, uninstalled PeerBlock and then just run it from the new (portable) folder that I created - it ran without problems on the WinXP system.

I've been using the PeerBlock version as noted above without issues for quite some time now. I was successfully using it on a WinXP system. However, I got a new computer with OS as noted above. Now when I try to run PeerBlock I find that I get the following error message (and PeerBlock won't launch):

Driver Error
PeerBlock is unable to load the packet filtering driver.
This is likely the result of some strange bug. Please report this error, including all information that follows, to the PeerBlock team at [forums.peerblock.com]. Thank you for helping us improve PeerBlock!
class win32_error

This driver has been blocked from loading

Any advice on getting it running again?

It seems like you're trying to use the 32-bit version of PeerBlock on a 64-bit operating system, not to mention that XP and Vista (and later) use a different driver. It's no wonder at all if it doesn't work.

What I would do is to uninstall the version you have installed, download the installer from [www.peerblock.com] and install PeerBlock with the installer. It should work after that. If you want PeerBlock to run on startup, follow this guide: [www.peerblock.com]

Huge thanks Keefa - you were absolutely correct. (This change over from a 32-bit to a 64-bit operating system is driving me nuts and the way Win7 is setup, compared to WinXP, is appalling.)

What I did though was download and 'install' the x64 portable version - I always prefer portable/standalone apps if they are available and run okay. As far as I can tell it seems to be running fine, though need to check it later when doing some torrenting.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

If anybody still has this error and it's independed from solution above, run PeerBlock in compatibility mode. For me in Windows 8 mode. Solution works in Windows 10.
