not working and cannot uninstall??
December 05, 2009 08:32AM
Hi,
I am running XP sp3 (32bit)

Tried peerblock for the 1st time (latest beta) and it does not seem to be working. (I used to have peerguardian but that seemed to have stopped working or updating lists so i replaced it with peerblock.

I tried the installeer package and was going to post logfile and config but read someone else had cured it with another download. I uninstalled peerblock and downloaded the xp32 bit zip (without installer).
Now peerblock is still not working (the ping test to 3.0.0.0 says "timedout" and the history shows nothing blocked or allowed)

I cannot find peerblock in C:\Program files so cannot find the log file or config folder. Nor does it appear in add/remove programs????

Try using the stable release -> [www.peerblock.com]

After you install it, update the lists and try to ping 3.0.0.0. If it "timesout" but doesn't show in PeerBlock click on the disable button, then enable button. See if that works.

I noticed you have alot of Blocklists. Have you tried removing all but 1 (P2P) ?

it's on just the default P2P lists as per the initial set-up wizard and despite how many I.Ps may be in those default P2P lists, it obviously ain't blocking anything!

I'm wondering if you uninstall, remove the PeerBlock folder in Program Files completely, then re-install the stable release if the issue occurs again.

Followed your request. No change. Ping to 3.0.0.0 timed out. no allowed or blocked events recorded.

New config and logfile .zip attached.

Hi byngo,

Sorry you're experiencing this problem.

First off, the .exe version download is the only one which includes an installer.  This means it's the only one which will show up in add/remove programs, in the Start menu, in C:\Program Files.  The .zip version is meant to be a "portable" version, for people who want to run the tool without any of those aforementioned things.  The expectation is that if you've downloaded the .zip file you will unzip it all into some directory somewhere on your system, and run it from there - these are really meant more for "advanced users", who have special requirements as to how they'd like to install/run it . . . hence the .exe version being labelled as "recommended for most users".

Now, the Stable Release did experience some issues like this for people, especially on XP.  It also has extra data in the tracelogs which might help us get to the bottom of this.  Of especial interest, it has some tracelog type code built into the driver itself as well as the user-mode (GUI) app that "controls" it.

If you could do the following, that would be appreciated:

1.  (Re-) Install the latest Beta Release, from the .exe version Installer package.

2.  Download and run the Microsoft DebugView tool, as per the instructions in this forum post.

3.  Reproduce the problem, and post the DebugView output to here

Thanks for bearing with us as we try to troubleshoot this problem,

Mark, Please find attached my pbfilter log having followed your instructions,

Now then, let me just say that it is now working But for info i did the following: -
1) Uninstalled stable release of PBlock
2) ran Crap Cleaner on the registry clean mode
3) restart XP
4) installed latest beta of PB
5) started the Debug tool as requested to create the log file
6) Started PB for the first time and updated lists for P2P.
7) Run Command "ping 3.0.0.0" which returned a timeout message
8) Closed PB from running
9) re started PB (Previously I was also getting an error message about unloading a driver or missing pbfilter file or something before under this scenario)
10) Run Command "ping 3.0.0.0" and hey presto!!!! Peerblock started logging stuff in the preview pane and no "Timed out message"

So somehow, maybe cleaning out the registry worked, I don't know.

HANG ON !!!!!!

After posting above, restarted Peerblock and before doing any p2p i did the ping test again (Ping3.0.0.0).

Peerblock showed no activity and the Timeout message was back.
Tried once again, exit PB, restart PB, Ping test etc... NO Joy

New debug log attached if it helps.
I'm getting so P****D off with this.

Same boat... Exact same issue... I can try to ping say google.com i will get responses until i actually try to go there. Then the responses stop. If i leave my machine idle they will start again. It started immediately after installing pb and doesn't occur when using my second os. (originally thought my nic went bad) It lets me ping both of my local networks 10.x and 192.168.x but most things fail at the internet level.

Hi bordr415, I'll be soon posting a test-build to help provide additional driver-tracing that might help figure out WTF is going on here.  If you can bear with us for a few days and run that version that would be appreciated - the more data we can collect on this problem, the better.  Yours is particularly strange, since it seems to randomly block/not-block/block-again...  sad smiley
