Wanting to get the Syntax right for creating my own list (to use with PeerBlock).

[ File begins here]
www.website.com [spaces] ip_address [spaces] ip_address
www.website.com [spaces] ip_address [spaces] ip_address
www.website.com [spaces] ip_address [spaces] ip_address
[ File ends here]
__________________________________________________________

-or-

Example # 2:
___________________________________________________________________________
[ File begins here]
[ author of this List ]www.website.com [spaces] ip_address [spaces] ip_address
[ author of this List ]www.website.com [spaces] ip_address [spaces] ip_address
[ author of this List ]www.website.com [spaces] ip_address [spaces] ip_address
[ File ends here]
___________________________________________________________________________

-or-

Example # 3:
__________________________________
[ File begins here]
ip_address [spaces] ip_address
ip_address [spaces] ip_address
ip_address [spaces] ip_address
[ File ends here]

Heya sos5.

I believe this thread will be able to answer your question (link: [forums.peerblock.com] ).

Howdy Tippy,

1. Is the colon required/recommended to be used?

2. Is the (-) dash required/recommended to be used?

3. Are left and right brackets [ ] allowed in the leftmost text?

4. Are spaces allowed between (description text) (ip address start) (ip address end) ?

5. Can the file mylist.p2p be saved as a:
(a) Text Document
(b) Rich Text Document
-or-
(c) Notepad Document ?

6. Do you recommend, that the mylist.p2p file, be saved, with a .txt (.TXT extension)?

7. When you say "If these IP Ranges are only one IP address long, have it start and end with the same thing." ,
are you saying the syntax of one IP address should be
[name]: 111.222.34.56-111.222.34.56 ?

Thanks for your help.

Heya sos5.

As far as I understood from MarkSide's description and also using iblocklist's paranoid list as reference, I'll answer how I understood it myself.

1. Yes, the colon ( : ) is required to separate description and IP addresses.

2. Yes, the dash (-) in is required on IP side.

3. That I'm not sure, but I'd assume you can.

4. After you've punched in a colon ( : ), no spaces are allowed. So using spaces is only allowed on description side.

5. mylist.p2p is just your basic .txt file. Write it, for instance, as notepad .txt file and just change the extension after you're done modificating. I'm not sure about .rtf though.

6. To be usable with PeerBlock, you should save/have it as .p2p extension. Save as .txt and change to .p2p. If you need to modify it then change from .p2p to .txt.

7. Yes. As a side note, your example had a space punched in after the colon ( : ). Refer to 4 =P.

Hello Tippy or others,

Would the file, for one ip address per line, look like this:

__________________________________________
[File begins here]
description:123.456.78.90-123.456.78.90
[File ends here]

The attached file, named "G Block List.p2p" works with PeerBlock.
I created this file, by going to C: > Program Files > PeerBlock > archive > pick a file to use.
Copy it to Desktop for editing, to get the Syntax right.

You can open PeerBlock > Protection tab > List Manager button > select the attached file, "G Block List.p2p", then click on View button to see the items in the file (Description ipAddress ipAddress).

I had a comma in a Description of the ip address range.
It was located between the word "Telecom" and "Inc" .
__________________________________________
[File begins here]
Time Warner Telecom, Inc:192.168.1.64-64.128.133.140
[File ends here]
__________________________________________

It prevented me from getting on the internet.
Taking the comma out, fixed the problem.
Could get on internet ok again.

I tried an experiment.
I added 5, 10, and 20 spaces between the (words in the) Description (of the ip address range).

__________________________________________
[File begins here]
Archer [ 5 spaces] Communications:192.168.1.64-66.235.133.1
Archer [ 10 spaces]Communications:192.168.1.64-66.235.133.11
Archer [ 20 spaces] Communications:192.168.1.64-66.235.133.14
[File ends here]
__________________________________________

It worked ok.
When I opened PeerBlock > Protection tab > List Manager button > select the (Block List file-with extra spaces in Description) file, then click on View button > the spaces remain in the Description. Which is ok. But it surprised me too.

Thanks for the contribution, sos5! Who would've thought that the comma could cause such an effect.

This will clearly help people creating custom list with their favorite text editor.

Please note that that the format of the IP addresses in your list should be:

[range_description]:[range_start]-[range_end]

The "range_start" field is supposed to be the beginning of a range, not the source of a connection.  You're not saying "block connections from 192.168.1.64 from accessing 66.235.133.1", you're saying "block my machine from contacting any IP address in the range from range_start to range_end".  So for example a line like this:

Archer Communications:66.235.133.0-66.235.133.255

...would block your machine from accessing any IP address from 66.235.133.0 to 66.235.133.255.  (Or allow, of course, depending on whether this list has been added as type Block or Allow.)  IP address 66.235.133.1?  Blocked.  IP address 66.235.133.11?  Blocked.  Etc.  If you want one line to refer only to one IP address, simply set that IP address as both the start and end of the range, like so:

Archer Communications:66.235.133.1-66.235.133.1
We really should document this somewhere.

. . .

Also, that's very strange that including a comma in the range description causes problems - I'll look into this and try to repro.  Downloaded lists don't exhibit this problem, but that could be because they're in P2B format.
