Custom block list using URL instead of IP address ?!
January 24, 2010 04:08PM
Hi there !
I'd like to use PeerBlock also as ADS filter for web browsing.
So I ask you if is possible to specify and "http address" to block instead of the IP address range: " http:\\www.website.com\promo\ads\*.jpg "

This would be fantastic, cause I'll not have to use an addictional web filter or any extension for my browser.
Thanks.

Hey, cubmatrix. Welcome to the forum!

No, it's not possible to block http addresses. As far as I know, that's not a planned feature at least yet. You could consider adding it to the bug tracker located at [code.google.com] .

Thank you for your interest in PeerBlock. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

if you are using Firefox download ADBLOCK-Plus. that will do exactly what you want with blocking ads (and other images), you can subscribe to lists that are updated and downloaded automatically

It is possible to do that though, if you find the website that is displaying the add - IE. Google adsense - block the server using the server's ip.....

The only problem with that is that website IP addresses can change, and can redirect you to one of any number of "mirror" type IP addresses.  www.google.com could resolve to 1.2.3.4 one time, then 2.3.4.5 the next, and 3.4.5.6 the time after that.  (To pick out some made-up numbers...)  So we can't for example simply lookup a website address for you and enter it's IP address into a new custom list.  This is also one reason why you may need to allow multiple IP addresses when browsing to any one given site.

Although if anyone knows of an easy way to identify all IP addresses that a given URL could be mapped to, I'm all ears...!

You can simply add the root address to your HOSTS file and direct it to 127.0.0.0
