Allow FTP and domain name, instead of IP
April 11, 2010 05:19AM
Hello, I have had some trouble with FTP's getting blocked. It would be nice to have an option to allow them, like there is with HTTP. Another thing that would be nice is the ability to use domain names (not just IP address) in the block/allow lists.

The feature you're looking for, regarding FTP allowing, is the port allowing. Right now one of the PeerBlock developer has that feature in active development.

domain name blocking, while easier for the user, is not as effective. since the packet arrives with the IP embedded it's easy to drop or allow. when you use domain names, you need to resolve those domains to the IP then check against the IP address in the packet which takes time. so what happens to that packet during lookup? block or accept it? its not just as easy as adding a name...
