Karnataka State Police Housing Corp
September 17, 2011 11:02PM
My computer automatically tries to contact the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation. (I live in the USA). Lucky for me PeerBlock blocks it. I do not know what application is trying to do this, and I've scanned for spyware with Hitman Pro, and Spybot search and destroy. My computer tries to do this at startup, and makes multiple tries, varying the 50000 port.

Can anyone explain this to me? Also could anyone advise me on how I can find out which programs or services on my computer access the internet when they actually do so?

I appreciate any help with this matter.

If you are Win 7 user, take the 'Resource Monitor'.

Choose Start→All Programs→Accessories→System Tools→Resource Monitor (or jump out of task manager).

Choose network and look for the program, that tries to connect to the blocked IP.

Thank you very much for your help, PBChecker. I am actually using Vista, and I found my resource monitor as a button under the performance tab of the task manager. I clicked on network but did not see the IP in question. PeerBlock did show that the IP was being blocked while I was looking at the resource monitor. It did not show up until I disabled PeerBlock. The culprit is avastsrc.exe. This is my anti-virus program.

I will contact Avast and make an inquiry. I'll post their answer on this board.

Again, thanks for your help PBChecker.

Avast responded to my question with a big "I don't know". They said their servers do not contact the Karnataka State Police, and only connect to servers based in the USA.

Someone was smart enough to include the KSP in a blocked list for PeerBlock. Whoever that was, could you please give me some background? Many thanks.

It's probably an obsolete block because Avast has a lot of update servers everywhere.
Post that IP address so I can find it in the database and disable the old KSP entry.

Eventually AVAST responded with this:

"hello,
avast contains webshield component which act as transparent proxy. Any process trying to communicate over certain ports (listed in the troubleshooting page under avast settings) is scanned by avast service = webshield.
So avast itself doesn't connect it is just a gateway between the process in your computer and internet.
