Properly-sized Desktop icons
December 01, 2009 11:25PM
I just found out about peerblock yesterday, and was extremely happy to see that it has progressed this far (I'm most happy with the signed driver as it means I can get out of test mode grinning smiley).
I also noticed that the desktop icon looked a little funny, and come to discover a lack of different icon sizes (most notably, 48x48 and 16x16) inside the exe.

So I opened up my favorite image editor and my favorite icon editor, and began working.
I present to everyone, 48x48 icons (plus 16x16, but these won't help the tray icon).

I've also included 256x256 icons (should Mark ever decide to compile the exe with these icons built in, they are a tad large) in png format as well as the .ico format.

All ico files are missing 64x64 because I'm lazy.

EDIT: dang attachments, here's what I wanted it to do, show a preview:

I could possibly do a vector version, it would alleviate the problem of scalability.
It might take some time, finals are approaching and it's getting hard to find time to do other things.

I think the icon should be made a little more complex though. Simple is nice, but it seems a little too simple imo.
i.e, maybe thicken the border, and make the shading a little more complex.

Oh put effort into exacms not peerblock! winking smiley

i'd assumed you'd made a vector version and pulled the ones you posted from there, no need to create one for now, these will do! smiling smiley

in regards to a more "complex" logo, there is one, here: [www.peerblock.com]

i think that the small blue cube was originally from a free set of icons in a development studio one of the Devs use, i think the ice cube one was to become our official logo... but we haven't got a vector one of that either, and can't do much with it...

It is interesting that we are using an ice cube. I have an idea for a logo that might be something better for the site but unsure of how it will mesh....

I like the toon and toon2 w/ PeerBlock's name best...

My fav is peerBlock.png and add PeerBlock's name to it.
I like the blocks squared like in peerBlock.png. All three much better than current.
Nice DarC

OK this has the same font used in the toon2. I don't think the font works w/o it being toon but I can change that easy enough.. Comic Sans MS was the original Font I used for the install script picture. Which does need updated by the way... The one currently being used does look atrocious.

Edit

Here is a better pick for the installer with the current logo...

It would be nice if they were put into the form of icon with ever measurement from 16 to 256.
Also would be nice if it included the yellow icon as well.

Dude I love that peerblock installer.png. That'd be a great pick for the front page! It shows the evolution of peer block smiling smiley

I'm liking these icons DarC.
I could definitely see peerBlock.png as a program icon.
The toon ones look slick. Reminds me of cel-shading.
The red block seems a little too distorted imo.

So, do we make an enhancement entry on the bugtracker?
I wanna see a new icon, especially one that will look normal (48x48) on my desktop.

We actually do already have some new graphics on the way, from the guy who created our new splashscreen for us, Mourad Mokrane.  He decided to recolor his latest iteration though, and I really his the original better . . . even though it's a "boring blue" in his eyes.  I'm a big fan of the blue splashscreen though, so expect great things from him all around...  Also, all his stuff is originally in SVG format, which means we'll be able to change resolutions of the images he creates as much as we'd like to.

Splashscreen (current)

Splashscreen (recolored)

Installer Pic (recolored)

I think that if the new Installer Pic was blue to match the splashscreen, it would look awesome.  He's also offered to create new icons for us, and I'm hoping maybe even to get him to create a new header-bar for our website(s) in the same style - help us move towards one unified "look and feel" and all that.

What do you guys think?

The blue one looks much nicer and more professional.

The red one doesn't seem to fit in with the default theme of Windows.

Hopefully the new icons will be Vista compatible (i.e 256x256)

Mark I think those two colours are just a change in hue...

Yeah the blue one is great!

We mustn't forget that we need the block itself in blue, yellow and red as icons, but for the 'normal' logo the blue one looks great!

Wow Mark, those look nice! Maybe we should consider adding theme-support for PB v2.x and allow one to change the hues of the splash screen, GUI etc tongue sticking out smiley

Actually it be quite nice to have 3 splash screens which tell the state of PeerBlock similar to the colours in the tray icon so people who hidden the tray icon will still know what it's blocking when they start PeerBlock.

Actually, that would be a great idea! It would make the Splash Screens actually good for something, too. winking smiley I'll ask Mourad to look into this when next I hear from him.
