Google paranoid of bots?

As I was creating a google account for the purpose of code.google.com. Here's what I encountered (check the image)... I do understand the need to fight againts those bots and other pesky computer independent AI controlled programs, but isn't this bit too much?

that's nothing new with them. I remember when gmail first started accepting new people everyone was complaining about the text message

Yeah i had to give them my number to get a gmail acount a few years back.

they SAID it was so you could only open one account (during the beta).

Google is a powerful brand. I wouldn't be suprise people would be convinced to give them their numbers. Look on the bright side, hoodadilly, you could support google by telling them to *sell* your phone number ;P !
